6464-175 Rock Island

6464175a.jpg

Production:  1954 & 1955.

History
The 6464-175 Rock Island box car was introduced in Lionel's second year of 6464 box car production. Its graphics and color are plain and unexciting. Actually, the 6464-175 Rock Island carries the exact same lettering and graphics as the previous years Rock Island offering (6464-75), but with different colors.

Due to the plain look of the 6464-175, this car has not created much interest in the collector market. Examples with extremely clean silver painted shells will be in demand as the silver has tended to fade or deteriorate with age.

Features
The 6464-175 box car included the following standard features: painted silver shell with blue lettering, single-block sliding doors, bar-end trucks with two operating couplers plus a single brakewheel. This box car is always found on a type I body mold.

Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
There is a rare variation of this box car. It has black lettering in place of the normal blue lettering.

Blue Lettering - Shown in the photo above - The common version.
Black Lettering - A rare version, extremely difficult to locate.
