6801 Flatcar w/ Boat
Production: 1957 - 1960
The 6801 Boat Car is an attractive and popular freight car. It was produced for four years in the late 1950, and although there are two variations to the flatcar, the original boat actually has three variations.
The 6801 flatcar was produced during the period when Lionel converted most of its rolling stock from bar-end trucks to AAR trucks. As is common with the transition items, this car can be located with both the bar-end and AAR trucks.
Standard features of this car vary with the year of production. The following list identifies the features unique to each year:
- 1957 - Molded red flatcar with white lettering, the number '6801' is always to the right of the word Lionel, gray boat cradle, bar-end trucks with two operating couplers plus a brakestand and brakewheel. The boat for 1957 was always a brown deck boat with white hull and a plastic windshield. An elastic strap was used to secure the boat to the cradle.
- 1958 - 1960 - Molded red flatcar with white lettering, the number '6801' is always to the left of the word Lionel, gray boat cradle, AAR trucks with two operating couplers plus a brakestand and brakewheel. The boats for 1958 - 1960 were either a yellow deck boat with white hull or a blue deck boat with a white hull. The yellow decks boats were the first to be produced and the blue decks replaced the yellow at some point in the production run. An elastic strap was used to secure the boat to the cradle.
