3510 Satellite Launching Car
The 3510 Satellite Launching Car is a one year only item. It was produced in 1962 and only appeared in the advanced consumer catalogue and not the regular consumer catalogue for the year. The only way to obtain this car was by purchasing set # 11011.
During the 1960s, Lionel had built three different satellite launching car. Of the three -- 3509 (1961 - 1962), 3510 (1962) and 3519 (1961 - 1964) -- the 3510 is the most difficult to locate.
Standard features of the 3510 include: unpainted red flatcar with white lettering, arch-bar trucks, non-operating couplers plus a brakewheel stand and four corner footsteps. Although a brakewheel stand was always included, the inclusion of a brakewheel was not always standard practice.
A satellite launching mechanism was mounted in the center of the car. This mechanism has the ability to launch the satellite several feet in the air! In addition to this structure, a yellow satellite dish and launchable satellite was always included with the car.
