6630 Missile Launcher

6630a.jpg

Production: 1961

History
The 6630 Missile Launcher car is a one-year-only item from 1961. It was displayed in the 1961 advanced consumer catalogue, but never appeared in the regular consumer catalogue for that year.

The 6630 is similar to the 6650 Missile Launcher car produced by Lionel between 1959 and 1963. While the flatcars are similar on each item, the missile launching mechanism is the exact same as is the rocket.

Features
Standard features of the 6630 include: unpainted black flatcar with white lettering, arch bar trucks with two non-operating couplers plus a brakestand and brakewheel.

The missile firing superstructure is always blue and black. Original missiles are a two-piece unit and usually found with a mixture of red and white components. All white missiles do occassionally surface and all red missiles are infrequent.

Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The 6630 Missile Launcher was available only in a few select sets from Lionel, all of which were uncatalogued sets. It was never offered for separate sale and an individual box does not exist for this item. The 6630 is a hard item to find because of its limited distribution in 1961.

The length of this flatcar is approximately 11 1/4" long (coupler to coupler).

Only Known Variation - Shown in the photo above - All 6630's are unpainted black flatcars with a blue and black superstructure. Missiles are usually a combination of red and white.
