1542 Three Car Electric Freight Set (1956)

History
This three car freight set from 1956 is lead by the unique-looking # 520 box cab electric locomotive -- which is a throwback design to several electric locomotives offered by Lionel throughout the 1930's. This locomotive design was only manufactured for two years (1956 & 1957) and never again offered for sale during the postwar years.

This one-year-only freight set is somewhat noteworthy in that it was Lionel's final postwar catalogued set with a retail price under $20. Additionally, it was the first postwar set not to have any components boxed -- all items were separated by cardboard inserts.
