Logs, Lumber, Pipes & Tanks

Lionel's transition of the basic flatcar to carry logs, lumber or pipes was a natural area of expansion with their freight cars in the late 1940's and early 1950's. As Lionel was looking to add realism within the product line, while also creating play value for customers, these freight cars were a logical choice. Creating a flatcar with removable products that dads and their sons could relate to -- achieved many successes. Additionally, many of these loads were frequently seen along the rails in the middle part of the 19th century, so there was a natural connection to the real world of railroading.
