History
The 1872 steam engine was classified by Lionel as a General or Civil War style steam engine. The 1872 is an excellent model of a real-life American locomotive of the mid to late 1800s. Lionel classified the 1872 as an O gauge item -- and it's 027 gauge counterpart was numbered 1862. Externally, the locomotives are nearly identical, however the 1872 has a few more features compared to the 1862. Lastly, during the four year production cycle of the 1872, Lionel included this General style locomotive at the front of two sets -- although one of sets ran for three years; 1959 through 1961.
Features
The 1872 steam locomotive has the following features: 4-4-0 wheel arrangement, gray painted boiler with a red cab and gold lettering, three position E-unit, wire handrailings, Magnetraction plus a gold ornamental bell, black ornamental whistle and functional headlight.
There are a couple of variations regarding this steamer, which include:
- Smokestack - Produced with either a black or gray smokestack, with the gray being slightly harder to locate compared to the black.
- Lantern - Produced with either a red or black lantern. The red version appears to have been produced from 1959 thru 1961, while the black appears to be the later production run from 1961 and 1962. The black lantern is slightly harder to locate.

The length of a 1872 steam engine and tender is approximately 16" long (cowcatcher to rear coupler).
Only Known Variation - Shown in first photo above. - The steamer in the above photo has a black smokestack and red lantern. Other variation exist involving the smokestack and lantern color.
