- 1875 / 1875W Western & Atlantic: General
Product Description
Production: 1959 - 1962
History
The 1875 Western & Atlantic coach passenger car is part of Lionel's General series passenger cars. The General series of passenger cars were the final all-new passenger car style produced by Lionel during the postwar era. All of the passenger cars in this series remain in demand as they are nicely detailed, have realistic exterior colors and are rather prototypical in their appearance.
This coach passenger car was available in two variations:
- The first -- and more common -- is the 1875W. This passenger car included a steam whistle on the interior of the car. Additionally, Lionel included the 1875W in two Super O sets between 1959 and 1962 -- both lead by the 1872 General steam locomotive.
- The second, and far less common variation is the 1875 -- without a whistle on the interior. The 1875 was also marketed as a Super O passenger car and surprisingly was never included in any set, but rather only available as a separate sale item.
Features
Standard features on the 1875 or 1875W coach passenger car include: simulated wood exterior, yellow painted bodies, brown painted roof, molded brown frame and end railings, dual interior lights, wire truss support braces on the base plus dual smokestacks and four ventilators on the roof. Each variation included a frosted window insert, although the 1875W had two windows on each side without the modeled insert to permit airflow for the whistle. Lastly, a simulated brakewheel was added to each end railing, however, this appears to be inconsistent as many original examples exist without a brakewheel. Additionally, this passenger car always had arch-bar style trucks with functional, self-centering couplers.
