History
The 221 Alco diesel made a brief appearance in 1963 and 1964. During its two-year apearance, the 221 carried three difference roadnames; Rio Grande (1963 and 1964), United States Marine Corps (1964 only) and Santa Fe (1964 only).
The Rio Grande was the only diesel of the three 221s to be catalogued. While the Rio Grande is a common item, the United states Marine Corps is a rare item and the Santa Fe is extremely scarce.
Features
Standard features of the 221 vary depending upon the roadname. Below is a summary of each:
- Rio Grande: yellow molded body with black lettering and stripes, traction tire, two-position E-unit and a non-operating rear coupler. It did not contain illumination and there was no front coupler. It also lacks a frame box between the trucks.
- United States Marine Corps olive-colored unpainted body with white lettering, traction tire, a non-operating rear coupler plus a frame box between the trucks. It did not contain an E-unit, illumination or a front coupler.
- Santa Fe: olive-colored unpainted body with white lettering, traction tire, two-position E-unit plus a non-operating rear coupler. It did not contain illumination or a front coupler and lacks a frame box between the trucks.
