Product Description
Production: 1959 - 1961
History
The Santa Fe aluminum passenger cars were manufactured for a few years; 1959 through 1961. These passenger cars are commonly referred to as the Santa Fe series and remain in demand today by both collectors and operators.
The Santa Fe passenger cars were included in only two Super-O sets; one in 1959 and 1960 (the same set for both years) and a second set in 1961. For both sets, the 2383 Santa Fe F3 AA diesel was Lionel's choice to power each outfit.
Included in the Pennsylvania series of passenger cars are:
- 2561 Vista Valley Observation
- 2562 Regal Pass Vista Dome
- 2563 Indian Falls Pullman
Features
Standard features on the Santa Fe series of passenger cars include: unpainted extruded aluminum bodies, plastic end caps, dual red side stripes with silver lettering (Santa Fe at the top and the individual car name in the middle), silhouetted window strips, die-cast passenger car trucks with functional couplers plus dual interior lights.
A common issue with these cars are their side stripes. Lionel used glue to adhere the red side stripes to each car -- which was not neatly applied. Over the years, the excess glue has aged and turned a light brown or tan color. Beware of cars with no signs of excess glue -- that usually indicates the side stripes have been replaced with reproduction stripes and the original glue was cleaned off.
