- 342 Culvert Pipe Loader
Product Description
Production: 1956 - 1958
History
The 342 Culvert Pipe Loader was introduced in 1956 and with it's companion the 345 Culvert Unloader (introduced in 1957) combine to be quite an impressive sight on any layout. The imposing size of both accessories as well as its action, noise and excitement continues to make this an interesting and fun accessory to operate on a layout. Even people seeing these combined accessories for the first time are impressed with the operation.
The 342 Culvert Pipe Loader can be set up and used independently of the 345 Unloader. The operator will manually load the culverts onto the accessory ramp in order to start the action. Operation of the 342 is relatively straightforward, although has proven to be a bit temperamental over the years. Culverts are carried from the loading ramp via magnet to the freight car and dropped into the freight car. Lastly, a 6342 Culvert Gondola was included with the accessory -- which was simply a modified 6462 gondola with a small ramp to hold the culverts.
Features
The 342 Culvert Pipe Loader includes the following standard features: black metal base with a plastic tan structure that holds the red operators station and gray culvert holding loading ramp. The superstructure to transport the culverts from the gray ramp to the freight car is metal with a metal claw and magnet used to pick up and move the culverts to the freight car.
Also included with the accessory are seven metal culverts, a # 90C controller and the 6342 culvert gondola. The 6342 never included a box when included in the set and was secured in place via the inserts within the box.
