- 6025 Gulf
Product Description
Production: 1956 - 1958
History
The 6025 was the final single dome tank car produced by Lionel in the postwar era. It has also become the hardest single dome tank cars to locate within the short 8" tank car series. Interest, however, remains minimal by both collectors and operators.
The 6025 was produced for three years. During this time, it was available in several different color and decal variations. Locating each variation will take some time and effort as some are hard to find.
Features
Standard features are minimal on the 6025. It includes: a single dome tank body -- usually unpainted, metal frame, trucks with operating couplers plus a Gulf decal.
For 1956 and the early part of 1957, the 6025 had bar-end trucks. For the later part of 1957 and into 1958, AAR trucks were the norm. In all cases, the 6025 always had two operating couplers.
Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The 6025 tank car was manufactured with three different tank colors and two different color lettering for the word 'Gulf'. None of the these are considered rare, but the orange tank is a bit harder to locate compared to the gray or black tank versions.
Unpainted Black Body, White 'Gulf' Lettering - This appears to be the first production run of the 6025 from 1956 and is always found with bar-end trucks. The word Gulf is printed in white over a blue background while the 'Lionel Lines' lettering is in white.
Unpainted Black Body, Blue 'Gulf' Lettering - The word Gulf is printed in blue over a white background while the 'Lionel Lines' lettering is in white. The trucks are usually the bar-end style.
Black-Painted Body, Blue 'Gulf' Lettering - The word Gulf is printed in blue over a white background while the 'Lionel Lines' lettering is in white. This version usually has AAR trucks. The black-painted 6025 is a difficult item to locate.
Unpainted Gray Body, White 'Gulf' Lettering - The word Gulf is printed in white over a blue background while the 'Lionel Lines' lettering is in blue. This version usually has AAR trucks. An interesting item to note on this tank car are the end caps. Although the body is unpainted gray, the end caps are almost always painted gray.
Unpainted Orange Body, White 'Gulf' Lettering - Shown in first photo above This is the final 6025 -- as well as the final single dome tank car -- produced by Lionel. The word Gulf is printed in white over a blue background while the 'Lionel Lines' lettering is in blue. This version always has AAR trucks.
