- 6119 Delaware, Lackawanna & Western
Product Description
Production: 1955 - 1966
History
The 6119 D.L. & W. (Delaware, Lackawanna & Western) work caboose marked the introduction of a significantly scaled down version of Lionel's premium work caboose. This new work caboose style allowed Lionel to save money by using less expensive materials, yet keeping the same theme of a work caboose.
Originally introduced in 1955, Lionel produced several different color variations of the 6119. For each new variation, Lionel included a suffix to the stock number to differentiate the newer version from a prior version.
Features
The 6119 work caboose generally had the same features between all versions. The following is a summary of each caboose with its appropriate suffix, features and years of production:
- 6119 - Unpainted red caboose and tray with white lettering, black painted frame with white lettering, four corner footsteps, bar-end trucks with a single operating coupler plus a short plastic smokestack. This version was available in 1955 and 1956.
- 6119-25 - Unpainted orange caboose and tray with black lettering, orange painted frame with black lettering, bar-end trucks with a single operating coupler plus a short plastic smokestack. This was only available in 1956.
- 6119-50 - Unpainted brown caboose and tray with white lettering, brown painted frame with white lettering, four corner footsteps, bar-end trucks with a single operating coupler plus a short plastic smokestack. This was only available in 1956.
- 6119-75 - Unpainted gray caboose and tray with black lettering, gray painted frame with black lettering, four corner footsteps, bar-end trucks with a single operating coupler plus a short plastic smokestack. The all-gray caboose was only available in 1957. Additionally, a rather rare, closely spaced rubber stamped variation does exist and is one of the rarest 6119 cabooses manufactured by Lionel.
- 6119-100 - Unpainted red caboose with white lettering, unpainted gray tray, unpainted black painted frame with white lettering, four corner footsteps plus a short plastic smokestack. It was produced with bar-end trucks in 1957 and AAR trucks thereafter, always with a single operating coupler. This was the longest running -- and most common version -- as it first manufactured in 1957 and remained in the product line through 1969.
- 6119-125 - Unpainted olive green caboose and tray with white 'Rescue Unit' lettering, olive painted frame with white lettering, four corner footsteps, AAR trucks with a single coupler plus a short plastic smokestack. This was only available in 1964.
Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
A very common problem with all 6119 cabooses is with the footsteps. Quite frequently the corner footsteps are either broken off or the paint has flaked off of the frame. Locating a 6119 work caboose with intact steps and paint is difficult.
The length of this caboose is approximately 8 1/2" long (coupler to end).
6119 - Shown in first photo above - A somewhat common caboose.
6119-25 (Second photo above) - Not readily available, hard to find in collectable condition.
6119-50 (Third photo above) - Not readily available, hard to find in collectable condition.
6119-75 (Fourth & Fifth photo above) - The widely spaced variation is not readily available and hard to find in collectable condition. The thinly spaced rubber stamped variation is one of the hardest to find of all 6119 cabooses.
6119-100 - (Sixth photo above) - By far, the most common version of all 6119 cabooses, usually found with AAR trucks.
6119-125 - The most difficult 6119 caboose to locate, truly a rare caboose.
