Product Description

Production: 1961 & 1962

History
The 616 A.T. & S.F. NW2 diesel switcher was produced for two years in the early 1960s. Although the NW2 switchers produced in the 1960s are generally a step down in quality from the early 1950s, this one does contain several of the more desireable features such as magnetraction and a functional horn.

In addition to being available as a separate sale diesel, Lionel included the 616 switcher as the lead locomotive in two sets. There was one outfit available in each year and both sets were designated as a Super O freight set.

Features
Standard features of the 616 include: black painted body with white lettering and strips, two axle Magnetraction, three-position E-unit (with the lever accessible from underneath the frame), functional horn, single headlight and non-operating front and rear couplers.

Most examples do not contain a simulated horn nor bell, however some do exist.

Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The only variation found on the 616 pertains to the mold. Most examples have an opening on the top for the E-unit's lever to stick through -- even though the E-unit lever is always found purtruding from below the frame. There are rare examples where this E-unit opening is plugged by Lionel during the manufacturing process of the mold.

Open E-unit Hole - Shown in the photo above - The most common variation.
Plugged E-unit Hole - A rare variation whose exact production date is unknown.
