Product Description
Production: 1952 - 1954
History
The 623 A.T. & S.F. NW2 switcher is a high quality switcher produced by Lionel in the early to mid 1950s. Except for the number, the external appearance is the exact same as the 622 A.T. & S.F. NW2 switcher from 1949 - 1950. The only significant internal difference is the 623 does not include the 622's bell ringing feature.
Somewhat surprisingly, Lionel never included the 623 NW2 switcher in any train outfit during its production cycle. It was only available as a separate sale locomotive.
Features
Standard features of the 623 includes: two axle Magnetraction, three-position E-unit, headlight at each end, dual operating coil type couplers, front marker lights, wire handrail plus GM & Santa Fe decals, black ornamental bell, silver ornamental horn and a radio wheel.
Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The only variation to the 623 diesel is the number of stanchions holding the wire handrail to the cab.
Three stanchions holding handrail - Shown in first photo above - The common variation.
Ten stanchions holding handrail (Second photo above) - This is a somewhat hard-to-find variation and experienced collectors believe the ten stanchion version was only produced in 1952.
