Product Description
Production: 1966
History
The 6464-250 Western Pacific box car is noteworthy in that is was the final 6464 series box car to be created during the postwar era -- even though its number is sequentially near the beginning of the series. Another interesting note regarding the 6464 series box cars is the first offering (the 6464-1) and the final offering (the 6464-250) both wore the Western Pacific road name.
Production of these box cars allowed Lionel to market a realistic and almost scale-like box car never previously seen in the Lionel family. The 6464-style box cars were an immediate success and remained in the Lionel catalogue up until its final year of postwar production, 1969. Even today, all 6464-style box cars remain a favorite of collectors and operators.
The 6464-250 Western Pacific is one of the harder 6464-series box cars to locate. Being a one-year-only offering as well as having been introduced in an era when interest in Lionel trains was dwindling, this has become a hard car to locate. Additionally, this Western Pacific box car was never included in any Lionel catalogued set.
Features
The 6464-1 Western Pacific included the following standard features: orange painted shell with blue feather and white lettering, multi-block sliding doors, AAR trucks with operating couplers plus a single brakewheel.
