Product Description
Production: 1953, 1954 & 1969
History
The 6464-75 Rock Island box car was part of the first offerings of the infamous 6464-style box cars. In total, four 6464-style cars were created by Lionel in their introductory year, 1953. Production of these box cars allowed Lionel to market a realistic and almost scale-like box car never previously seen in the Lionel family. The 6464-style box cars were an immediate success and remained in the Lionel catalogue up until their final year of postwar production, 1969. Even today, all 6464-style box cars remain a favorite of collectors and operators.
The 6464-75 was included in only one O gauge turbine set in 1953 -- as well as being available for separate sale. It's exterior lettering and graphics are the exact same as the 6464-175 rock Island -- the only difference being the colors. The 6464-75's plain green exterior with stark gold lettering makes this an attractive car. Although the -75 is a common car, clean examples with nice gold lettering are hard to locate as the gold tends to deteriorate with age.
Features
The 6464-75 box car included the following standard features: painted green shell with gold lettering, sliding doors, bar-end trucks with two operating couplers plus a single brakewheel.
Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The length of the 6464 style box car is approximately 10 1/2" long (coupler to coupler).
With 'New 5-53' on Sides - Shown in first photo above - The more common version of this car has New 5-53 stamped to the left of the sliding doors. These were produced in 1953 and 1954 and always have a single block on the sliding door.
Without 'New 5-53' on Sides (Third photo above) - A slightly harder version of this car exists which does not have New 5-53 stamped to the left of the sliding doors. These were produced in 1969 and always have multiple blocks on the sliding door.
