6464-825 Alaska

Product Description

Production:  1959 & 1960

History
The 6464-825 Alaska box car is one of the most sought after of the 6464 series box cars. The combination of a colorful blue and yellow exterior coupled with a popular roadname keeps this box car in demand. This freight car remains desirable as it is not an easy box car to locate in collectable condition.

Additionally, Lionel produced an Alaska set (# 1611) for a single year: 1959. The set consisted of the 614 Alaska switcher, 6162-60 Alaska gondola and 6027 Alaska caboose as well as the 6465 Lionel Lines black two dome tank car and 6825 flatcar with bridge. However, collectors were not happy with the two non-Alaska freight cars and quickly sought to add the 6464-825 Alaska box and the 6636 Alaska hopper creating the set many felt should have been produced by Lionel from the outset.

Features
The 6464-825 Alaska box car included the following features: blue-painted body with yellow-painted side lettering and graphics, painted multi-block sliding doors to match the side colors plus a single brakewheel and the later style plastic AAR trucks with functional couplers. Lastly, the Alaska box car was manufactured with two different type mold variations with the later version being much harder to locate compared to the earlier one.

Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The length of the 6464 style box car is approximately 10 1/2" long (coupler to coupler).

Only Known Variation - Other than the two mold types, all Alaska box cars are painted blue with yellow graphics and lettering.
