6672 Santa Fe Refrigerator Car

History
The 6672 Santa Fe Refrigerator Car was a creative and new design for Lionel in 1954. In an attempt to produce even more prototypical freight cars in the early to mid-1950's, Lionel created this scale-like (1:48 scale) replica of a real refrigerator car at the time. The exterior detail surpassed even the popular 6464 series box cars with a functional plug-door on each side, multiple simulated tanks and components on the belly of the freight car plus a sliding information panel on one side!

The 6672 was listed in the Lionel consumer catalogue in all three years as a separate sale item. Additionally, Lionel included the 6672 in one O gauge freight set in 1955 and one 027 gauge freight set for 1956.

Features

The 6672 REA refrigerator car included the following standard features: brown molded roof and end panels, white molded body with either blue or black side lettering, bar-end trucks with functional couplers, functional sliding plug-doors, single brakewheel plus a simulated control panel with sliding door on one side of the refrigerator car.

Earlier production included blue lettering while later production had black lettering. It is unknown when the color of the lettering changed from blue to black. The black lettered variation seems to be slightly easier to locate compared to the blue lettered refrigerator cars. Lastly, there is a somewhat rare blue lettered version having three lines of manufacturing and capacity details to the right of the plug door.
