- 6802 Flatcar w/ Girders
Product Description
Production: 1958 & 1959
History
The 6802 Flatcar with US Steel Girders is an example where Lionel engineers used existing parts from other products to create a new freight car. In the case of the 6802, Lionel used the basic flatcar produced by Lionel in the late 1950's and added two girders from the 214 Girder Bridge as the freight load.
Although the 6802 is a basic freight car, Lionel did include it in three outfits during its two year production cycle. For each year -- 1958 & 1959 -- Lionel included the 6802 with an 027 gauge freight set having an Alco diesel as the led locomotive. Additionally, in 1958 the 6802 was included in a single Super-O freight set with the colorful 2348 GP-9 leading the freight train. Nevertheless, even being part of three sets and available as a separate sale item, production numbers were low and locating this freight car is harder than most collectors realize.
Features
Standard features of this car include: unpainted red flatcar with white lettering, a brakewheel stand and brakewheel, corner footsteps, AAR trucks with operating couplers plus two girders. An elastic band was used to secure the girders to the freight car.
