6805 Atomic Energy Disposal Flatcar

History
The 6805 Atomic Energy Disposal Car is an unusual-looking freight car and is based solely upon the imagination of Lionel designers -- it does not have a real-life equivalent. This car is sometimes referred to as the Radioactive Waste Car.

The 6805 is part of Lionel's "Space & Military" series. It is essentially a flatcar with two metal rails mounted to the top and a load consisting of two waste containers carrying simulated radioactive waste! Each container has a blinking light and when illuminated, the cutouts on each side of the container show the symbol for radioactivity. For 1958, Lionel included the 6805 in four different Super-O freight sets during the year -- which was quite an impressive introduction for a new freight car offering in that year.

As with many items from the Space & Military series, there are delicate parts that are prone to damage due to improper handling. For example, the top container handles are fragile and frequently cracked or completely missing.

Features
The 6805 Atomic Energy Disposal Car has the following standard features: unpainted red flatcar with white lettering, bar-end trucks with operating couplers, two 027 rails mounted to the top of the flatcar, two plastic containers plus a brakewheel stand and brakewheel.

The plastic holding containers have four small fragile handles on top and have red and black printing on two sides. Each container has a red insert by the side openings and is illuminated by a blinking light. The containers can be painted either gray or tan -- with the gray ones much harder to find.
