9655 Chesapeake & Ohio Five Car Diesel Freight Set (1963)

Set 9655 is an uncatalogued Lionel diesel freight set sold exclusively through Sears Roebuck & Co. stores for the 1962 Christmas season. In total, the 1962 Sears Wish Book offered five Lionel train sets -- with this outfit being the second lowest priced of the five sets. Production estimates are in the area of only 6,000 total units produced, making this an extremely difficult set to locate.

Lionel's choice of rolling stock for this freight set was focused on the space-age theme. Four of the six items in the outfit were brand-new items for the 1962 product line including the 2365 C & O diesel, 3349 Turbo Missile Launcher, 6413 Mercury Capsule Car and 6463 Rocket Fuel Tank Car.

Any child receiving this set as a Christmas present in 1962 needed to be ready to be a state-of-the-art engineer for an impressive space-age train set.
