2029 Lionel Lines or Pennsylvania Prairie

Quantity:

Product Description

Production:  1964 - 1969

History
Lionel classified the 2029 steam engine as a Prairie-type steamer. It is a mid-size locomotive and contains several of Lionel's quality features. It shares its boiler casting with several other Lionel locomotives: the 637, 2016, 2018, 2026, 2036 and 2037 steamers. Although the boiler castings are the same on these steamers, in most cases the internal workings are slightly different.

The 2029 has the distinction of being the final postwar Prairie steamer. Although it was catalogued for six years, it is a fairly hard steamer to locate. Unlike earlier Prairie steamers, the 2029 has not stirred the interest of collectors or operators.

An interesting piece of Lionel history surrounds the Prairie steamer. The first catalogued postwar set from 1945 -- set # 463W -- was headed up by the 224 Prairie steamer. Lionel's final catalogued postwar set from 1969 -- set # 11760 -- was pulled by the 2029 Prairie steamer.

Features
The 2029 has the following standard features: 2-6-4 wheel arrangement, black painted boiler with white numbers, limited driving wheel hardware, three-position E-unit, smoke, sheet metal trailing truck, headlight, single traction tire plus an ornamental bell.

The 2029 was available with several tenders including:

  • 234T Lionel Lines non-whistling tender.
  • 234W Lionel Lines whistling tender.
  • 234W Pennsylvania whistling tender.
  • 1060T Lionel Lines non-whistling tender.

Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The 2029 steam locomotive has two variations. The variations parallel Lionel's move of its corporate headquarters from New York to Maryland in 1968. The only differences on the variations are the nameplate located on the bottom of the locomotive.

New York NY Model - Shown in first photo above. - The locomotives bottom nameplate reads 'Lionel Toy Corp, New York NY' and is the more common version. This was produced from 1964 to 1967.
Hagerstown Maryland Model - The locomotive's nameplate reads 'Lionel Toy Corp, Hagerstown Maryland 21740' and is much harder to locate than the earlier version. It was only produced in 1968 and 1969.
