History
The 317 Trestle Bridge is a continuation of the 316 Trestle Bridge produced in 1949. The only difference between the 316 and 317 is the color -- all 316's bridges are silver while the 317 is gray.

The 317 Trestle Bridge is designed from a typical mid-size trestle bridge built in many locations throughout the United States during the 1940's and 1950's. Many operators use the 317 Trestle Bridge in conjunction with either the 110 Graduated Trestle set or 111 Elevated Trestle set.

Operators of postwar Lionel trains must be extremely cautious when using a trestle bridge on their layout. Freight cars such as the 6460 Crane car, 3424 Brakeman car or any of the helicopter cars need to have the car or its load properly aligned so as to not get caught on the side or top of the trestle.

Collector quality bridges -- along with their original boxes -- are somewhat hard to locate. Most 317's are usually found in poor condition as the bases and sides are frequently scratched or chipped from usage.

Features
The 317 Trestle Bridge includes the following features: gray-painted steel bridge, solid sheet metal base and a trestle superstructure. Most bridges have the typical Lionel item number and nomenclature stamped on the bottom of the base. However, there are examples where Lionel omitted the stamping detail.
