6262 Wheel Car

History
The 6262 Wheel Car was introduced in 1956 and only manufactured for two years. It's based upon a real-life flatcar used by many railroads in their repair and maintenance areas. Lionel offered the 6262 a separate sale item plus included the freight car in two 027 gauge steam freight sets in 1956.

Features
Standard features of the 6262 included: usually a black molded flatcar with white lettering, gray superstructure used to hold the wheels and axles in place, eight sets of wheels and axles, corner simulated footsteps plus and a brakewheel and brakestand. Bar-end trucks with operating tab couplers were standard and always mounted to a sheet metal plate.

The length of this flatcar is approximately 11 1/4" long (coupler to coupler).

Black Flatcar - Shown in the photo above - The common version is a black flatcar with white lettering.
Red Flatcar (Third photo above) - A scarce variation only produced for a brief period during 1956. This is one of the most difficult postwar freight cars to locate.
