- 6413 Mercury Capsule Carrying Car
Product Description
Production: 1962 & 1963
History
The 6413 Mercury Capsule Carrying Car was produced for only two years. Due to several small and fragile parts, complete and original 6413's are difficult to locate as original parts are generally missing or damaged.
Lionel included the 6413 in three catalogued sets as well as being available as a separate sale item. Interesting, Lionel included an Alco diesel as the lead locomotive in each of the 027 gauge sets. For 1962, the 232 New Haven and 229 Minneapolis & St. Louis were the lead locomotive for the two outfits containing the Mercury Capsule Carrying Car. For 1963, Lionel chose the 211 Texas Special Alco diesel as the locomotive to pull the 6413.
This freight car is based upon the imagination of Lionel's engineering department. The unique look and profile of the Mercury Capsule car -- with its humped-up frame and unusual cargo load -- will make this freight car stand out on any layout or display case.
Features
The 6413 Mercury Capsule Carrying car contains the following standard features: unpainted blue frame with white lettering, two gray simulated Mercury Capsule's, metal support posts between the capsules plus two tie-down straps at each end
Most experienced collectors know the 6413 did not include a brakewheel nor brakewheel stands at each end -- which was included on the 6519 Allis Chalmers humped-up freight car.
