Product Description
Production: 1957, 1958, 1964 - 1966
History
The 6464-525 was the second box car in the 6464 series to carry the Minneapolis & St. Louis road name. The graphics and color on the first M. & St. L. box car -- the 6464-50 -- was plain and unexciting. Conversely, the -525 box car was painted a vibrant red with new and more exciting lettering and graphics on each side. For this reason, the later M. & St. L. remands in demand over the earlier version.
Production of these box cars allowed Lionel to market a realistic and almost scale-like box car never previously seen in the Lionel family. The 6464-style box cars were an immediate success and remained in the Lionel catalogue up until their final year of postwar production, 1969. Even today, all 6464-style box cars remain a favorite of collectors and operators.
The 6464-525 is a common car. It was included in four sets between 1957 and 1958 plus was available as a separate sale freight car. Although this is an easy-to-locate boxcar; it's eye-appealing exterior graphics keeps this car in demand by both collectors and operators.
Features
The 6464-525 boxcar included the following standard features: painted red shell with white lettering, sliding doors, two operating couplers plus a single brakewheel.
For most of the 1957 year, this freight car was produced with bar-end trucks. Beginning in late 1957 -- as well as the 1964 through 1966 production run -- the box car was equipped with AAR trucks.
