- 6469 Liquefied Gas Tank Car
Product Description
Production: 1963
History
The 6469 Liquefied Gas Tank Car was produced in only one year -- 1963 -- and is certainly Lionel's most unusual looking tank car produced during the postwar era.
The Liquefied Gas Tank Car is another example of Lionel engineers being very creative. They were able to design a completely new freight car using existing parts and molds. The 6469 is basically a 6467 or 6477 flatcar with a new -- and inexpensive -- load making a totally new freight car!
As with many postwar flatcar loads, the flatcar is common but the 6469 cylinder load is the valuable portion of this freight car.
Features
The 6469 contains the following standard features: unpainted red flatcar with white lettering, AAR trucks with operating couplers, a molded black bulkhead at each end plus a brakestand and metal brakewheel. Most 6469's have operating couplers but non-operating couplers are known to exist on this flatcar.
The simulated tank is a cardboard tube wrapped in glossy white paper with black lettering. The Erie decal is wrapped around and glued to the tube. Each end of the tube has a stamped metal cap painted in white. Be cautious of reproduction tubes, they are generally very clean and white as the original tubes have slightly faded due to their age.
Unlike the 6467 and 6477 flatcars with their number printed on the actual flatcar, the stock number of this freight car is only stamped on the sides of the simulated tank and not on the flatcar.
Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The length of this type of flatcar is approximately 11 1/4" long (coupler to coupler).
Only Known Variation - Shown in the photo above - All 6469 flatcars are molded red with AAR trucks and a simulated cylinder tank car load.
