- 6821 Flatcar w/ Crates
Product Description
Production: 1959 & 1960
History
The 6821 Flatcar with Crates is another example of Lionel engineers using existing parts to create a new freight car. The 6821 is the basic flatcar produced by Lionel in the late 1950s but with the addition of a simulated cargo. This cargo load was first used on the 3444 Animated Erie Gondola.
Although the 6821 is a plain and simple freight car, it is somewhat uncommon. Like most postwar freight cars with removable loads, the value with this freight car is the simulated cargo load. Locating the flatcar is easy, but locating a complete freight car with load is difficult. Lastly, Lionel included this freight car in two 027 steam freight sets -- one in 1959 and a follow up in 1960.
Features
Standard features of this car include: unpainted red flatcar with white lettering, a brakewheel stand and brakewheel, corner footsteps, AAR trucks with operating couplers and a cargo load. The simulated cargo load was secured to the flatcar with a gray elastic band.
The cargo load is always tan in color and never contained printed information on the sides.
Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
The length of this flatcar is approximately 11 1/4" long (coupler to coupler).
Only Known Variation - Shown in first photo above - All 6821's are red flatcars with tan cargo loads.
